China waives transit visa requirement for Vietnamese citizens and grants 30‑day visa‑free stay in Hainan

On August 20 2026 the National Immigration Administration of China issued a new policy for holders of Vietnamese passports. The measure removes the need for a transit visa when Vietnamese travelers pass through Chinese airports or seaports for a short layover.

The transit exemption applies to 240 hours – roughly ten days – at 65 designated entry points. Travelers must hold a valid ordinary passport, possess a confirmed onward ticket to a third country, and meet standard health and security checks.

In addition to the transit relief, the policy allows Vietnamese visitors to stay in Hainan province without a visa for up to 30 days. Eligibility requires a passport and a planned stay within the province, with the same health and security standards applied.

These changes aim to boost tourism and trade between the two countries, making short trips and regional itineraries easier for Vietnamese travelers planning business, tourism, or family visits in China.
