Namibia Launches New Employment Permit for Investors

Namibia has announced a new Employment Permit to Conduct Business, set to take effect on 1 September 2026. The permit is designed for foreign investors who wish to start or run a business in the country without first obtaining a traditional work visa.

The permit allows investors to reside in Namibia for the duration of their business activities. Applicants must provide a detailed business plan, proof of sufficient capital, and evidence of relevant professional experience. The minimum investment threshold has not been publicly disclosed, but officials said it will be comparable to regional standards.

Eligibility extends to individuals, partnerships, and corporate entities from any country. Holders may bring immediate family members as dependents, who will receive the same residency rights. Dependents are allowed to study or work in Namibia under the same permit.

The permit streamlines the application process by consolidating multiple steps into a single online submission. Processing time is expected to be 60 days from receipt of a complete dossier, significantly faster than the previous system that required separate work permits and residence authorisations.

Economic analysts expect the new permit to boost foreign direct investment, especially in sectors such as mining, renewable energy, and tourism. Namibia hopes to position itself as an investment gateway to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) market.

Comparatively, neighboring countries like South Africa and Botswana continue to rely on traditional work visa frameworks, which many investors find cumbersome. Namibia’s approach could give it a competitive edge in attracting capital and expertise.

The government will monitor the program’s impact through quarterly reports to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Adjustments to investment thresholds or eligibility criteria may be made based on market response.
