Afghanistan technically opened an e-Visa system in 2026, and almost every government in the world is telling its citizens not to use it. Citizens of most countries can now apply for a visitor e-Visa online, but arrival is restricted to Kabul International Airport, and there is a paperwork trap worth knowing about: Afghan immigration officials may refuse visas issued by Afghan Republic-era officials at embassies abroad, insisting instead on visas issued by Taliban-appointed consular staff or missions aligned with the current authorities. As of 2026, the diplomatic missions confirmed operational for this purpose include those in Pakistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, India, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Turkey, and Iraq.
The travel advisory picture has not softened. The US keeps Afghanistan at Level 4, Do Not Travel, reiterated in January and February 2026, citing civil unrest, crime, terrorism, wrongful detention, kidnapping, armed conflict, and limited health facilities, and both the US and Canadian embassies in Kabul remain closed. Essentially every major government advises against travel here, and that advice should be read before any visa logistics are even considered.
