Guide
Albania keeps entry simple. Visitors from the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and the EU get up to 90 days in any 180 days without a visa, and citizens of the EU, Schengen, EEA, and the UK can enter with either a passport or, where applicable, a national ID card valid for at least three months beyond the date of departure.
By land, the main story is a handful of busy gates. Kakavia on the Greek border operates 24 hours and has been rebuilt and modernized, and it is among the most trafficked crossings in the country. Smaller crossings may have reduced staffing after 20:00, so plan a night arrival around a major gate.
Border crossings

Kakavia is the main one and works around the clock. Kapshtica, near Bilisht in the Devoll district, is the second most important and connects southeastern Albania with northwestern Greece. Greece is in Schengen, so these are external borders for Albania and a full check for you.
- Hani i Hotit and Muriqan, toward Montenegro
Both are described as staffed 24 hours. Hani i Hotit is a popular route into Montenegro.
- Morinë, for Kosovo, and Qafë Thanë, for North Macedonia
Morinë leads to Kosovo, and Qafë Thanë, near Lake Ohrid, leads to North Macedonia. Both have improved facilities and shorter waits than a decade ago, according to guides.
- The Adriatic ferries
Bari to Durrës runs all year, with 3 to 6 daily sailings in high season and 1 to 2 the rest of the year, from about 7.5 hours and around 35 euros. Sarandë to Corfu runs several times a day in summer, and because Greece is in Schengen, passport control is required.
