Azerbaijan runs its tourist entry through ASAN Visa, an e-Visa portal at evisa.gov.az that covers 87 countries. The state fee is 20 US dollars plus a 9 dollar service fee, approval normally comes within three working days, and the visa allows a stay of up to 30 days. Citizens of Georgia, Russia, Türkiye, Belarus, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Moldova, Serbia, Ukraine, Qatar, the UAE, Morocco, Albania, and the Maldives do not need a visa at all.
Azerbaijan and Georgia sit close enough that a land trip between them is genuinely practical, while the Armenian border is a different story, the two countries have no diplomatic relations and no open crossing, so an Azerbaijan and Armenia trip has to be two separate trips, not one overland route.
Border crossings
- The Red Bridge, from Georgia
One of Azerbaijan's few functioning land border crossings, and the one most tourists doing an overland Caucasus route actually use. Georgia is visa free for Azerbaijani entry and vice versa, which keeps this crossing straightforward.
- Samur, the Russia crossing, and Astara, the Iran crossing
The other two named land border posts, each following the visa or visa free rule for the relevant nationality, Russia is visa free, Iran is not.
- No open border with Armenia
Azerbaijan and Armenia have no diplomatic relations and no functioning crossing between them, a fact any Caucasus itinerary needs to plan around from the start, not discover at a map's edge.
Transit routes
- Apply through the official ASAN Visa portal
evisa.gov.az is the government's own site, and the fee structure there, 20 dollars state fee plus 9 dollars service, is worth comparing against any third party site quoting more.
- Plan the Caucasus loop through Georgia, not Armenia
The Red Bridge crossing makes a Georgia and Azerbaijan combination genuinely simple, while Armenia needs its own separate itinerary reached another way.
