Bolivia changed its rules for Americans in late 2025. US citizens have been visa free for stays of up to 90 days within a 12 month period since 1 December 2025, ending a policy that had required them to pay a 160 dollar reciprocity fee for decades. Most Western passports now enter Bolivia visa free for up to 90 days, and passports must be valid for at least six months.
The new step for everyone is SIGEMIG. Bolivia asks every foreign visitor to complete a free online pre-registration, regardless of nationality and even if no visa is needed. It takes about 8 to 10 minutes, opens 30 days before travel, and generates a QR code that you show at the border. Immigration officers may also ask for proof of onward travel and sufficient funds.

Bolivia asks for the international certificate especially for travel below about 2,300 meters east of the Andes, including Beni, Pando, and Santa Cruz, and the certificate only becomes valid 10 days after vaccination.
