Guide
Chile takes its agriculture seriously, and the form you fill in at the border shows it. Every traveler must complete an affidavit for the Agricultural and Livestock Service, the SAG, and Chile's own tourism site says it is mandatory to declare any animal or plant products you bring in, with confiscation and potentially very high fines for anything undeclared. You can do it on paper when you arrive, and an online version also exists. Citizens of South America, the EU, the United States, Canada, and Australia do not need a visa for tourist visits, and guides describe a 90 day tourist card.
Easter Island is a separate entry system inside Chile. Under Law 21.070, visitors may stay a maximum of 30 days on Rapa Nui, must hold a return ticket from the island dated no more than 30 days after their outbound flight, and need a reservation at SERNATUR-authorized lodging. They also complete the Single Entry Form, the FUI. Honey products cannot be brought in, and touching or feeding marine fauna, especially turtles, is prohibited.
Border crossings
- Chacalluta and Santa Rosa, Arica to Tacna
The main overland connection between Chile and Peru, part of the Pan-American corridor. SAG and the customs service launched a joint digital declaration at Chacalluta to speed up entering the country.
- Chungará and Tambo Quemado, the Andean pass to Bolivia
One of the principal Chile-Bolivia passes in the central Andes, connecting La Paz with its nearest seaport, Arica. It is a high mountain crossing, so weather and altitude are part of the plan.
- Paso Cardenal Samoré, between Osorno and Bariloche
The primary gateway between Osorno in Chile and San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina, and a scenic one.
- Los Libertadores, the pass that closed for a month
The crossing to Mendoza is described in this site's Argentina guide. In 2026 it was closed for 33 days by snow, so anyone with a fixed schedule should have a flight backup.
Transit routes
- Flying to Easter Island means booking the whole trip first
The return ticket dated within 30 days and the authorized lodging reservation are entry conditions, so book them before you fly, and keep the confirmations handy.
- Chile has been reopening its land crossings
A government notice described a Border Normalization Plan under which 22 land crossings had opened for transit with neighboring countries. Confirm the crossing you want is operating before you set out.

The SAG declaration is where the risk is, since a forgotten apple or a bag of nuts can turn into a fine. When in doubt, tick yes and let the inspector decide.
- The tourist stay is 90 days
Guides describe a tourist card for up to 90 days, and Chile's tourism site lists which nationalities need a temporary stay visa instead.
- Rapa Nui has stricter rules than the mainland
The 30 day cap, the lodging registry, and the honey ban do not apply on the mainland, so check the island's rules separately from Chile's general ones.
