Christmas Island Travel Guide

Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean well south of Java, follows the same two-track system as Norfolk Island. From the Australian mainland, no passport or visa is needed, just photographic identification, a driver's license or Proof of Age card, shown for every passenger including children, for Customs and Immigration clearance. Arriving from outside Australia is different, the normal Australian Customs and Immigration procedures apply in full, a passport is necessary and a visa may be required depending on your nationality, the same as any other international entry point into the country.

US citizens specifically can apply for an Australian electronic travel authorization, the ETA, the standard route many nationalities use for a short Australian visit, confirming that Christmas Island genuinely is treated as Australian territory for visa purposes, not a separate jurisdiction with its own simplified system for international arrivals.
