Denmark is checking its border with Germany, at land and sea crossings alike, and the controls are currently scheduled through 11 November 2026. The Minister of Justice has justified them by pointing to a serious terrorism and sabotage threat, which is why a few kilometers of Jutland can involve a police stop even though both countries are in Schengen.
The bigger surprise for visitors is that Denmark is not one entry regime. The Faroe Islands and Greenland belong to the Kingdom of Denmark but are outside Schengen and the EU, so a normal Schengen visa does not give access to either one. If you need a visa, it must carry the wording valid for Greenland or valid for the Faroe Islands. Since March 2026, third-country nationals who hold a residence permit in Denmark or another Schengen country can travel to both without a visa, and Nordic citizens can enter without a permit.
Border crossings
- Germany, at land and sea
The Danish controls cover both the land border and ferry crossings with Germany. They are described as running to 11 November 2026, after repeated extensions of two and four months, so plan for a document check rather than an open road.
- The Øresund Bridge to Sweden

- The Faroe Islands and Greenland, a border inside the Kingdom
Arrival there is an entry from outside Schengen. Your passport should be valid for three months after you leave the Schengen area and issued within the last ten years, which are the standard Schengen conditions.
Transit routes

Ask the Danish authorities about the specific wording on your visa before you book a trip to Tórshavn or Nuuk.
