Spain is connected to the rest of Schengen by land, but it also has two very different external-frontier situations: Gibraltar beside Andalusia, and the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the North African coast. That means a traveler can move from France or Portugal with little visible ceremony and still encounter a genuine external border a few hours later.
Airports are only part of the picture. Ferry routes from Algeciras, Tarifa, Almeria, and Barcelona make Morocco a practical neighbor, while the Balearic and Canary Islands add long domestic sea and air routes after a traveler has already entered Spain.
Border crossings
- La Jonquera-Le Perthus
The AP-7 and A9 meet here on the main Catalonia-France motorway corridor. It is one of the most important road crossings for travelers driving between Barcelona and southern France.
- Irun-Hendaye
This road and rail gateway connects northern Spain with the French Basque Country. It is the practical crossing for travelers using the Atlantic rail corridor or driving between San Sebastian and France.
- Badajoz-Caia and Tui-Valenca
Badajoz-Caia carries major motorway traffic between Extremadura and Portugal, while Tui-Valenca crosses the Minho between Galicia and northern Portugal. Both are internal Schengen routes, but traffic and police checks can still vary.
- La Linea de la Concepcion-Gibraltar
This is a controlled crossing into Gibraltar, which is outside Schengen. A visit there should be planned separately from an ordinary Spain-France road trip because the ability to return to Spain depends on the traveler's nationality and Schengen permission.
Transit routes
- Algeciras-Tanger Med
The vehicle ferry from Algeciras to Tangier Med is the main Strait of Gibraltar route for travelers taking a car or coach toward Morocco.
- Tarifa-Tangier Ville
Tarifa's passenger ferry reaches central Tangier and is often more convenient for a short city visit than the vehicle-oriented Algeciras route.
- Barcelona and Almeria to Morocco
Longer ferry routes connect mainland Spain with Nador and other Moroccan ports. They take more planning than the Strait crossings, but they are genuine international sea entries, not domestic island ferries.
- Barcelona to Paris by rail
High-speed rail crosses the French border near the Catalan corridor, giving travelers a practical alternative to flying between northeastern Spain and France.
Entry point notes
- A Morocco ferry arrival is an external Schengen entry
Passengers arriving from Morocco complete Spanish immigration at the port before continuing inland. The ferry terminal is not treated like a domestic cruise stop.
- Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish, but not ordinary mainland crossings
Their land borders with Morocco have their own operational and security arrangements. Confirm the current passenger rules before building an itinerary around either crossing.
- Schengen entry normally happens only once
A traveler arriving in France and continuing into Spain normally does not receive a second entry stamp, although temporary police checks can still occur on internal routes.
