Guide
Georgia's visa free list is unusually generous. Citizens of the EU, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and several other countries can enter without a visa, typically for up to 90 days within 180, and some nationalities are allowed a full year. A passport should be valid for at least three months on entry.
The catch is the two breakaway regions. If Georgian border guards find an Abkhazian visa, Abkhazian stamps, or a Russian checkpoint stamp from the border with Abkhazia in your passport, you are likely to be fined and often refused entry to Georgia, and the same risk applies if you have entered from South Ossetia. Georgia treats entering those regions from Russia as an illegal entry.
Border crossings
- Kazbegi and Upper Lars, the only Russian gate for travelers
The one crossing with Russia open to international travelers, and the only one that does not run through South Ossetia or Abkhazia. It is described as open around the clock but is regularly closed by winter weather in the high Dariali Gorge.
- Sarpi, the Turkish coast crossing
About 12 kilometers south of Batumi, open around the clock, and widely regarded as the easiest Georgia and Türkiye crossing for tourists. Kartsakhi, reached via Ardahan, is the less crowded alternative. This site's Türkiye guide describes the gates on the Turkish side.
- Armenia, at Sadakhlo and Bagratashen
The Armenian border is open to international travelers and works normally in both directions. Armenia's guide on this site lists Bavra, Gogavan, Bagratashen, and the rail crossing at Ayrum.
- Azerbaijan, at the Red Bridge, with a caveat
Foreigners can in theory cross at the Red Bridge, but Azerbaijan has kept its land borders closed to entry since 2020, so you generally cannot enter Azerbaijan overland from Georgia, though leaving Azerbaijan into Georgia has been possible.
Transit routes
- Batumi is minutes from Türkiye
The short hop from Sarpi makes it easy to combine Adjara with a trip across the Turkish border.
- Winter can close the north
The road through the Dariali Gorge to Russia is closed by weather from time to time, so a winter drive is a risk.
Entry point notes
- Do not enter Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia
It is treated as an illegal entry into Georgia, and the stamps in your passport can be used against you at the Georgian border.
