Gibraltar Travel Guide

Gibraltar's entry rules changed meaningfully in 2026 under a new UK-EU treaty that integrates the territory into Schengen border management. UK citizens now need passports issued within the previous 10 years, valid for at least three months beyond departure from Gibraltar or the wider Schengen Area, and as of the new arrangements taking effect 15 July, UK visas and residence permits are no longer accepted for entry to Gibraltar, a genuine change from how things worked before. National ID cards have not been accepted since Brexit, a valid passport is required for essentially every visitor.

Under the treaty, EU Schengen citizens can move freely between Spain and Gibraltar with no passport checks at the land border, while non-Schengen visitors, UK citizens included, post-Brexit, still go through border controls entering from Spain, a somewhat unusual arrangement where Gibraltar's own citizens face more formality crossing into what used to be a straightforwardly British-controlled border than EU citizens do. ETIAS, expected from late 2026, will apply to most non-EU visitors, UK citizens among them, the same authorization rolling out across the wider Schengen periphery.
