Greenland, despite being Danish territory, is not in the EU and not part of Schengen, and a visa for Denmark or any other Schengen country simply does not work for entry here, a genuinely separate authorization is needed. Citizens of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden can freely enter, live, and work in Greenland, reflecting the close Nordic relationship, while EU, EEA, and other Nordic country visitors more broadly get visa free entry for stays up to 90 days. A passport needs to be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from Greenland.

For travelers whose nationality does require a visa, holding a Schengen visa does not help, a separate application specifically for Greenland has to go through a Danish diplomatic mission or the Danish Immigration Service. Processing typically runs 10 to 20 business days, but during the peak summer season, June through August, when tourism interest is highest, that window can stretch to 4 to 6 weeks, worth building into any warm-season trip planning well ahead of time.
