Guide
Hungary is the edge of Schengen in two directions, and the busiest gate is Röszke, where the M5 motorway meets Serbia's Horgoš. The crossing runs around the clock on the E75 and handles more than 10,000 vehicles a day. Car waits are reported at anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, with the shortest queues overnight between 01:00 and 06:00, and the longest between 07:00 and 11:00 and 16:00 and 20:00.
Because Serbia and Ukraine are outside the EU, both borders are external, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies. It has been fully operational at every external Schengen border since 10 April 2026, and at Budapest's Ferenc Liszt Airport it began gradually on 18 November 2025 and affects only passengers with non-EU passports.
Internally, Hungary is not free of checks either. Austria checks its Hungarian border through 15 March 2027, and Slovenia's controls with Hungary and Croatia have been extended to 21 December 2026.
Border crossings
- Röszke and Horgoš, into Serbia
The main road crossing, on the E75 and the M5, and by far the busiest on the Hungary-Serbia border. Plan around the queue pattern, and expect a full external border check in both directions.
- Five roads into Ukraine
Barabás, Beregsurány, Lónya, Tiszabecs, and Záhony are the five road crossings open on the Ukrainian border. Chop to Záhony is the largest, the only one designated for trucks over 7.5 tonnes, and the only crossing with a direct international rail link, the Kyiv to Budapest line.

These are internal borders, so Hungary itself does not run a booth, but Austria and Slovenia have controls on their frontiers with it, through 15 March 2027 and 21 December 2026 respectively.
Transit routes
- Buy the e-vignette before you enter a toll motorway
A valid motorway vignette is compulsory on toll-bound motorways and expressways, foreign cars included. Options in 2026 run from 1 day and 10 days to monthly, annual, and regional county passes, and a new discounted M1 regional annual vignette covers Pest, Fejér, Komárom-Esztergom, and Győr-Moson-Sopron counties. After buying online you get an email confirmation, which you should keep for any roadside check.
- At Budapest, expect to be registered
A first EES registration at Ferenc Liszt takes fingerprints and a photo, and later trips are matched against the stored record.
Entry point notes
- Hungary uses the normal Schengen framework
For most visa exempt visitors that is 90 days in any 180 day period, recorded by the EES rather than by a stamp.
- Entering from Serbia or Ukraine is your Schengen arrival
A land arrival at Röszke or Záhony is where a non-EU traveler is first registered, so the biometric step happens at the border, not later in Budapest.
