Guide
India shares land borders with Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, but a map of the borders is not a map of tourist entry options. Passenger access depends on the particular Immigration Check Post, its current security situation, and the permission attached to the traveler's nationality and route.
The most important practical distinction is that India's e-Visa is port-specific. The official e-Visa guidance lists designated airports and seaports, and an e-Visa for those locations cannot simply be carried to an unlisted land border. For an overland itinerary, the crossing itself has to be researched before the visa application.
Border crossings
- Attari-Wagah
This is the best-known India-Pakistan land gateway, but passenger operations are politically sensitive and can change without much notice. Do not build a trip around it without checking the current official position.
- Petrapole-Benapole
The West Bengal crossing is the principal road gateway between India and Bangladesh and one of the most significant land corridors for regional movement.
- Raxaul-Birgunj
This Bihar-Nepal crossing is a major road route into Nepal. A traveler crossing here is dealing with Indian and Nepalese entry rules separately, not one shared visa system.
- Dawki-Tamabil and Moreh-Tamu
Dawki links Meghalaya with Bangladesh and Moreh links Manipur with Myanmar. Both are named, real crossings, but their availability to foreign travelers is more conditional than the main airport gateways.
Transit routes
- Raxaul-Birgunj and Sunauli-Bhairahawa
These are the overland corridors most often considered by travelers moving between northern India and Nepal. Visa, permit, and transport arrangements differ by nationality and by the exact crossing.
- Kolkata and Bangladesh routes
Rail and bus links between eastern India and Bangladesh have changed over time. Confirm the current passenger service with the operator before assuming a cross-border train is running on your travel date.
- Cruise entry is also port-specific
Mumbai, Cochin, Chennai, Goa, Mangalore, and other listed seaports can process eligible e-Visa arrivals, but a cruise itinerary must use an approved immigration port rather than an arbitrary berth.

- The e-Visa list is not a general land-entry permission
The official FAQ lists designated airports and seaports, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Goa, Kochi, Jaipur, Varanasi, and Port Blair. A traveler entering at Attari, Petrapole, Raxaul, Moreh, or another land ICP needs the permission accepted at that specific point.
- Application timing is part of the visa
The official e-Visa guidance allows applications before arrival within its published window, but the permitted lead time depends on the e-Visa category. Use the current government portal instead of copying a timing rule from an old blog.
- Remote crossings need a second check
Even when a border is geographically open, current passenger operation and foreign-traveler eligibility may be different. This is especially important for Attari-Wagah, Moreh-Tamu, and smaller Bangladesh crossings.
