Guide
Cambodia's biggest entry story right now is a border that is not there. Thailand closed all of its land crossings with Cambodia in late June 2025 during an armed conflict over disputed temple territory, a ceasefire signed on 27 December 2025 collapsed in early January 2026, and the crossings remain shut with no reopening date. Thai officials have said more than once that there will be no reopening until Cambodia accepts Thailand's conditions.
For everyone else the entry rules are straightforward. Visa exempt stays are 30 days for Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Maldives, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam, 14 days for Brunei, Myanmar, and, until 15 October 2026 as a temporary measure, China, Hong Kong, and Macau, and 7 days for Thailand, reduced because of the 2025 tensions. A tourist visa on arrival costs 30 dollars, and the e-Visa, single entry and valid for up to 30 days, is quoted at 30 dollars by one source and 36 dollars by a 2026 guide, so read the fee on evisa.gov.kh before you pay.
Since January 2025, travelers flying in must also submit the free Cambodia e-Arrival Card within seven days before arrival. It is not a visa, and it is required even if you already have one.
Border crossings
- Every Thailand crossing is closed
That includes Poipet to Aranyaprathet, the busiest, and also Cham Yeam to Hat Lek, O'Smach to Chong Jom, Pailin to Ban Pakard, and Choam to Chong Sa-Ngam. Brief, locally announced reopenings have been followed by closures again, and Thai officials have called reopening claims on social media fake news. Plan around it, do not hope.
- Bavet to Moc Bai, the Vietnam corridor
The main road link between Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh, and one of only two land crossings that accept the e-Visa. Buses leave Ho Chi Minh City through the day and take 6 to 7 hours including formalities, at roughly 12 to 35 dollars in mid 2026.
- Vinh Xuong and Ha Tien to Prek Chak
Two alternative ways in from Vietnam. Vinh Xuong is a river crossing, with speedboats from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh covering about 170 km of the Mekong in 5 to 6 hours. Ha Tien to Prek Chak is the coastal route toward Kampot and Kep. On land, the e-Visa is listed only for Bavet and Trapeang Kriel, so expect to buy a visa on arrival at other crossings.
- Trapeang Kriel to Nong Nok Khiene, the only Laos crossing
It is the one official crossing with Laos, and the Cambodian side is listed as an e-Visa entry point. It is open daily from 7 am to 5 pm, and both Cambodian and Lao visas are available on arrival.
Transit routes
- Bangkok to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, by air
Bangkok to Siem Reap takes about an hour, and Bangkok to Phnom Penh about an hour and a quarter. Buses and trains still run inside each country, away from the border zone, but the old overland route between them is closed.
- Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh, by road
The bus route through Bavet and Moc Bai is the reliable overland link at the moment, and it is worth allowing a full day.
Entry point notes
- The e-Visa works at only a few entry points
It is accepted at Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, Sihanoukville International Airport, and, on land, at Bavet from Vietnam and Trapeang Kriel from Laos. Two Thai crossings are described as temporarily closed for e-Visa entry.
- The e-Arrival Card is separate from any visa
Submit it online through the official site or app within seven days before you arrive, at no cost.
- Check the length of your passport and pages
A guide lists a passport valid for at least six months with one empty page as a requirement.
