South Korea has one land boundary, the Demilitarized Zone with North Korea, and it is not a normal tourist border. For ordinary visitors, the country is reached by air or sea, with Incheon serving as the main international gateway and Busan handling important ferry traffic from Japan and China.
That geography makes the arrival paperwork more straightforward than the security headlines suggest. A DMZ or Panmunjom tour is a controlled excursion inside South Korea, not an alternative immigration route, and it does not let a traveler cross into North Korea.
Border crossings
- The DMZ and Panmunjom
These are controlled military areas, not public road crossings. Access depends on an authorized tour or permission, and the security situation can suspend visits without turning the area into a normal border post.
- There is no ordinary public land entry from North Korea
A traveler cannot arrive in South Korea by driving across the DMZ. Any itinerary suggesting that the DMZ is a routine visa or immigration crossing is wrong.
Transit routes
- Busan-Fukuoka and Busan-Shimonoseki
International passenger ferries connect Busan with Japan, making Busan a practical sea gateway for travelers who do not want to fly.
- Incheon to Chinese ports
Incheon has passenger ferry links to ports including Qingdao and Weihai, although schedules are operator-specific and should be confirmed before booking.
- Airside transit through Incheon
A passenger who remains airside on an eligible international connection may not formally enter Korea. The airline and the itinerary determine whether a transit passenger must pass Korean immigration.
Entry point notes
- The Korea Electronic Arrival Card is separate from K-ETA
The free electronic arrival card can be submitted from three days before arrival. It is an arrival declaration, not a visa and not a replacement for any K-ETA requirement.
- K-ETA status must be checked by nationality
Use the official K-ETA portal for the current rule. Exemptions and their end dates can change, so do not hard-code an old temporary exemption into a travel plan.
- Ferry passengers clear immigration at the port
Travelers arriving at Busan or Incheon by ferry complete Korean immigration at the named seaport. A sea arrival does not bypass the same nationality and permission checks applied at an airport.
