Guide
Morocco is one of the few places where the nearest Schengen border is a boat ride away. Ferries from Tarifa to Tangier Ville take about an hour, and from Algeciras to Tanger Med about an hour and a half with Baleària, while FRS Iberia also runs Algeciras to Tanger Med, Tarifa to Tangier Ville, and Motril to the Spanish exclave of Melilla. For visitors from Europe, the sea route is the short one.
Most visitors need no visa. Citizens of all EU and EFTA states, the GCC states, and Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Tunisia, Turkey, the UK, and the USA can stay 90 days visa free, which covers tourism, family visits, and business meetings but not local employment. An e-Visa system, launched on 10 July 2022, is open to nationals of several countries, and conditional e-Visas exist for people with valid visas from Schengen states, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, the UAE, the UK, or the USA. Airside transit of up to 24 hours needs no visa for anyone.
The border most people ask about, with Algeria, is simply shut. It has been officially closed to all travel since 1994, and trade and travel between the two countries has to go by air or sea.
Border crossings
- Ceuta and Melilla are not ordinary crossings
Spain and Morocco reopened the border posts at Ceuta and Melilla on 17 May 2022 after more than two years of closure, first for Schengen nationals only. They are not a major tourist route, and most people entering Morocco by land use other posts. In late July 2026, a mass crossing into Ceuta was reported, Spain and Morocco reinforced their deployments, and the Beni Enzar (also written Beni Ansar) post at Melilla was closed temporarily, with reporting describing the situation as unresolved in early September. Check current conditions before planning a route through either one.
- Algeria, closed since 1994
Nothing here is a matter of paperwork. The land border between Morocco and Algeria has been shut for more than three decades, so plan to fly or sail between the two.
- The ferry ports are the real land borders
Tangier Ville and Tanger Med are the ports the Spanish ferries use. Arriving from Morocco means a Spanish immigration check at the port, and leaving Spain means Moroccan entry checks on the other side.
Transit routes
- Tarifa to Tangier Ville, the short hop
About an hour by ferry. Operators include Baleària and FRS Iberia, and one operator page notes that DFDS was ending its Tangier Ville to Tarifa service, so do not assume every timetable you find is current.
- Algeciras to Tanger Med, and Motril to Melilla
Algeciras to Tanger Med takes around an hour and a half with Baleària and is the vehicle friendly option. FRS Iberia's Motril to Melilla sailing goes to a Spanish city on the African coast, from which the Beni Enzar crossing leads into Morocco.
Entry point notes
- Passports should outlast the trip by a margin
A passport valid for the whole stay is the minimum, and many airlines and officials prefer six months of validity, so check the expiry date before you book.
- The exemption list keeps changing
Morocco activated visa free entry for Kazakhstan on 19 March 2025, for Ghana on 6 June 2025, resumed it for Ecuador on 1 August 2025, and has an exemption for Albania starting 15 August 2026. Look up your own passport on a current list, not an old one.
