Mali is not a place most Western governments want their citizens visiting right now, and the entry process for some nationalities has gotten harder for reasons beyond tourism. ECOWAS citizens still enter visa free for up to 90 days despite Mali's own withdrawal from ECOWAS in January 2025, and a separate list of 24 countries, including Algeria, Andorra, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Chad, the Gambia, and Ghana, also do not need a visa for tourism. As of January 2026, Mali suspended visa issuance to US citizens specifically, in response to reciprocal American entry restrictions, so that nationality faces a different and currently closed door regardless of the general rules.
The reason to think hard before visiting is security, not paperwork. A state of emergency is in effect nationwide, with random identity checks and roadblocks a normal part of travel, and al-Qaeda affiliated JNIM and ISIS-Sahel both operate and regularly attack international troops, Malian soldiers, and civilians. Multiple governments advise against all travel to Mali for any reason, citing crime, terrorism, kidnapping, unrest, and fuel shortages.
