Guide
Myanmar's paperwork is the easy part, and its safety situation is the hard part. The e-Visa, running since 2014, is issued within about three working days, costs 50 US dollars for tourism, is valid for 90 days from issue, and allows a maximum stay of 28 days, but it only works if you enter through Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw, or Mandalay International Airport specifically, arriving anywhere else invalidates the eligibility. Visa on arrival has been mostly suspended for tourists since well before 2026, and what remains is limited and largely aimed at business travelers at major airports, not the default option for a visitor.
Since the February 2021 military coup, Myanmar has been in an ongoing civil war, with the military government controlling major cities and infrastructure while armed resistance groups hold ground across border regions and rural areas. The United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the European Union all keep Myanmar at their highest do not travel advisory level, citing armed conflict, civil unrest, arbitrary enforcement of local law, landmines and unexploded ordnance, and the real risk of wrongful detention.
Border crossings
- Mae Sot to Myawaddy, the main Thailand crossing
This is the principal overland route between Thailand and Myanmar, connecting Thailand's Mae Sot with Myanmar's Myawaddy across the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge. A visa is required in advance, this crossing does not issue one, and conditions on the Myanmar side have been unsettled through the civil war.
- The e-Visa only works at three airports
Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw, and Mandalay are the only entry points where an e-Visa is honored, so an itinerary that starts anywhere else, including most land crossings, does not fit the program even with an approved e-Visa in hand.

Landing anywhere other than the three approved airports is described as invalidating the e-Visa, so double check your flight routing against the requirement before you book.
- Read the current advisory, not an old one
The civil war has been active since 2021 and conditions shift by region, so a general sense that Myanmar is open for e-Visas is not the same as it being safe to visit, check your government's latest advisory for the specific area.
