Niger's visa system exists on paper, ECOWAS citizens enter without a visa, an e-Visa portal launched in 2023 covers many other nationalities, and embassy visas cover the rest, but the practical picture is dominated by security and a specific US restriction. Niger completely and permanently prohibits visa issuance to all US citizens and indefinitely bans their entry, and separately, Niger Immigration has at times not been accepting visa applications at all, so the paperwork question can be moot before it even starts, depending on your nationality and the current state of the system.
The security situation is severe. Niamey's Diori Hamani International Airport has itself been the site of attacks in 2026, including an Islamic State-Sahel assault on 29 January and gunfire and explosions near the airport, the presidential palace, and the national broadcaster during a coup attempt on 28 to 29 August. Since seizing power, the governing junta has moved away from Western partners, deepened ties with Russia, and left ECOWAS to help form the breakaway Alliance of Sahel States with Mali and Burkina Faso. Every government advisory used for this guide says do not travel to Niger for any reason, citing crime, unrest, terrorism, health, and kidnapping, and Nigerien authorities require military escorts for any foreigner traveling outside Niamey.
