Norfolk Island Travel Guide

Norfolk Island, an external territory of Australia in the South Pacific, splits its entry rules cleanly by where you are coming from. Traveling from the Australian mainland, no passport or visa is required, though photographic identification, an Australian driver's license, a Proof of Age card, or a current Norfolk Island Document of Identity, has to be shown for every passenger, children included, for Australian Border Force clearance. A passport is not mandatory for this route but is described as the preferred documentation, since it also covers you in case a flight is diverted to another country.

Arriving directly from overseas is a different matter entirely, normal Australian Customs and Immigration procedures apply exactly as they would on the mainland, including from New Zealand, a valid passport is necessary and a visa may be required depending on your nationality, the same rules that would apply flying into Sydney or Brisbane. Regular air services connect Norfolk Island with both of those cities, the standard way most visitors actually reach the island.
