The Netherlands is a Schengen country with land borders to Belgium and Germany, so a traveler driving in from Antwerp or Cologne normally sees an open-looking road rather than a passport booth. The border still exists, and police, customs, or temporary document checks can appear, but routine visa stamping normally happened at the first external Schengen entry.
The United Kingdom is different. Eurostar passengers and ferry travelers arriving from Britain cross an external Schengen border at the station or port, which makes Amsterdam Schiphol, the Hook of Holland, and the IJmuiden ferry terminal more important to entry planning than a short drive from Belgium.

The motorway corridor between Antwerp and Breda is the main road approach from Belgium into the southern Netherlands.

Venlo connects the Netherlands with Germany and carries substantial passenger and freight traffic toward the Ruhr.

Transit routes
- Eurostar to London
Passengers leaving Amsterdam or Rotterdam for London complete the relevant Schengen and UK controls before boarding. The controls are part of the station journey, not something to discover after reaching Britain.
- Amsterdam to Brussels and Paris
High-speed rail connects the Netherlands with Belgium and France, with the internal Schengen segment normally free of a second entry stamp after the first external arrival.
- Hook of Holland-Harwich
The Stena Line ferry connects the Netherlands with the UK and creates a full external Schengen entry event on the return journey.
- IJmuiden-Newcastle
The DFDS route gives travelers a sea connection to northern England and Scotland. It is a long international ferry, not a domestic Netherlands sailing.
