Puerto Rico Travel Guide

Puerto Rico is a US territory, so for US citizens getting there is a domestic trip. No passport is needed, flights operate like those between states, and there are no customs lines or immigration checks between Puerto Rico and the mainland. What has changed is ID. Since 7 May 2025, every US adult aged 18 or older needs a REAL ID compliant driver's license, a US passport or passport card, an enhanced driver's license, a military ID, or another accepted federal ID to board a domestic flight, including flights to and from Puerto Rico. Children under 18 traveling with an adult do not need ID for domestic flights, though guides suggest carrying a birth certificate or school ID.

Foreign visitors follow the same rules as anywhere else in the United States. Non-US citizens, including Canadians, need a passport and must meet standard US entry requirements, which means an ESTA under the visa waiver program or the appropriate visa.
