Sweden has extended its internal border controls for another six months, from 12 May 2026 until 11 November 2026, together with Denmark and Norway. The government's reasoning is a serious threat to public order and internal security, citing terrorism, sabotage, and cross-border crime linked to state actors. The controls cover all internal borders, land, sea, and air, including the land border with Denmark, and the Swedish Police Authority decides where and how they are carried out.
In practice, the place most people meet them is the Øresund Bridge and Hyllie railway station between Copenhagen and Malmö, plus the harbors on the south and west coasts. Swedish police check toward Sweden and, only rarely, toward Denmark.

This is the one land border Sweden has with Denmark, and both cars and trains are affected. Øresundsbron says a valid driver's license from a Nordic country is usually enough for Nordic citizens, but the safest option is a passport, and that you are responsible for proving your citizenship. Children can cross with a parent's identification and some questioning.

The controls also apply at ports serving ferry routes with other Schengen countries, so arriving by sea from another Schengen country can involve a police check.

Pet owners must notify Swedish Customs when they bring dogs or cats into the country, which is a separate step from the identity check.
