Every single entry channel into Singapore now requires the SG Arrival Card, Changi Airport, the Woodlands and Tuas land checkpoints, and the ferry terminals alike. Nationality, visa status, and length of stay do not matter, the requirement is universal. Submit it no earlier than 72 hours before arrival, since it is valid for that one trip only and cannot be reused on a later crossing.
The one real exception is narrower than people assume. Malaysian nationals crossing by land still need the SGAC, the exemption only covers holders of specific long term passes, a Student's Pass, Dependant's Pass, Long-Term Visit Pass, or Work Pass, not tourists making a routine crossing.
Border crossings
- Woodlands and Tuas, the only two land options
Every road crossing between Singapore and Malaysia funnels through one of these two checkpoints. Woodlands carries the older, heavier traffic pattern, Tuas is the newer route built specifically to relieve it.
- QR codes now replace the passport scan for some travelers
Drivers, motorcyclists, and bus or lorry travelers using Woodlands or Tuas can clear immigration with a QR code instead of a physical passport scan, a genuinely faster option ICA rolled out specifically for these two checkpoints, not available at Changi.
- Changi handles the volume, the causeway handles the commuters
Most tourists fly into Changi, but the daily volume of people crossing at Woodlands, largely Malaysia-Singapore commuters, is enormous in its own right, this is a genuinely busy working border, not a quiet backwater crossing.
Transit routes
- Changi to the city in under 30 minutes
The MRT's East-West line reaches downtown from the airport in about half an hour, one of the more painless airport transfers anywhere in Asia, no separate airport express fare needed.
- The causeway crossing as its own commute
Plenty of travelers day trip into Johor Bahru and back over Woodlands, a genuinely common short hop, not just a border formality, though it comes with the same SGAC requirement on the way back in.
- A small city, so plan the return leg, not just the arrival
Singapore's compactness cuts both ways, arrival is easy, but a same day return through immigration at either checkpoint or Changi is worth timing around peak commuter hours if you are driving.
Entry point notes
- The SGAC is universal, no quiet exceptions
Tourists, business travelers, and children of any age all need it, regardless of which of the three channel types they use. There is no shortcut for a short visit or a transit stop.
- Long term pass holders are the only real exemption
If you hold a Student's Pass, Dependant's Pass, Long-Term Visit Pass, or Work Pass, and you are crossing by land specifically, you do not need to file a fresh SGAC each time. Everyone else, including Malaysians on an ordinary visit, still does.
- Visa status is separate from the arrival card
Filing the SGAC does not replace whatever visa or visa exemption already applies to your nationality, it is an additional declaration layered on top, not a substitute for it.
