Guide
Slovenia checks two of its borders, and has been doing so for years. It notified controls at its land borders with Croatia and Hungary from 22 June to 21 December 2026, citing threats from terrorism, organized crime, human smuggling, and arms trafficking, and Italy has introduced checks on its border with Slovenia and extended them in parallel. So the road from Trieste to Ljubljana can involve a police check even though Italy and Slovenia are both in Schengen.
At the actual external border, the EU Entry/Exit System has been mandatory for third-country nationals since 10 April 2026. Slovenia applies it at three border crossing points for international air traffic and two for international maritime traffic, meaning that a flight into Ljubljana registers you, but a train from Italy does not.
Border crossings
- Croatia and Hungary, the controlled frontiers
Both are internal Schengen borders, and the stated reasons are terrorism, organized crime, human smuggling, and arms trafficking. You will not find a customs post, but police checks are a known possibility until at least 21 December 2026.
- Italy, from Trieste
Italy's checks on the Slovenian border were introduced for the same reasons and have been extended alongside Slovenia's.
- Ljubljana Airport, the external border
The EES at Ljubljana Airport registers fingerprints and a facial image for non-EU travelers, replacing the passport stamp.
Transit routes
- Buy the e-vinjeta before you drive on a motorway
The digital vignette is mandatory for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes on all motorways and expressways, marked with green signs, for residents and foreign visitors alike. It is linked to your license plate rather than stuck on the windscreen, and you can buy it online from anywhere before you travel.
- Trieste and Ljubljana, by road or rail
The journey crosses an internal border that is currently checked by both countries, so keep identification with you.
