Svalbard, the Norwegian Arctic archipelago, holds a genuinely unusual status: it is entirely visa free for everyone, regardless of nationality, no visa, work permit, or residence permit is required from Norwegian authorities to travel there, live there, or work there. The catch is entirely about how you actually get there, since Svalbard is not part of the Schengen Area even though it is part of Norway, and there are no direct international flights, every route goes through mainland Norway first, which is Schengen territory.

That routing creates a real practical requirement for travelers who would otherwise need a Schengen visa: you need a double entry Schengen visa specifically, not a single entry one, since you pass through mainland Norway on the way to Svalbard and again on the way back, and a single entry visa would be used up on the first crossing, leaving you unable to legally return through Norway afterward. Travelers who are Schengen visa exempt can simply fly to Svalbard with no visa needed at any point in the journey.
