Tunisia has a long visa free list, about 97 nationalities in all. EU citizens, apart from Cyprus, and more than 70 other countries, including Australia, Canada, Japan, Brazil, and most Arab states, can stay up to 90 days, with longer allowances for some, four months for Germany and Canada and two for Bulgaria, and 15 days for Iran and Iraq for tourism only. Travelers from Azerbaijan, India, Georgia, and several Central Asian countries can enter visa free only on an organized tour with a hotel voucher. Guides say a passport should have six months of validity beyond arrival.
An e-Visa system has been discussed for years, but a tender to build one was declared unsuccessful after the bids failed to meet technical and administrative standards, so travelers who need a visa still get it from a Tunisian diplomatic mission.
Border crossings
- Ras Ajdir, the Libyan border
The crossing has stayed open for normal traffic into 2026 after a full reopening in mid 2024 following earlier closures linked to clashes. It is prone to frequent and unpredictable closures from security incidents, protests, and political disputes, and guides say the Tunisian entry checks usually move faster than the Libyan side, where vehicle inspections can drag.
- The Algerian border, the one built for tourists
Guides describe the border with Algeria as the only one fully functional and open to tourists. More than 131,000 Algerian visitors crossed between 1 January and 25 February 2026, especially through posts in Jendouba governorate. In December, buses of Algerian tourists were stopped at crossing points, particularly Oum Tboul, when Algeria reportedly imposed a new requirement for an international transport authorization.
- Ferries from Italy
Grandi Navi Veloci and CTN run conventional ferries linking Tunisia with Genoa, Civitavecchia, Salerno, and Palermo, on two to four days a week, with crossings as short as about 20.5 hours and fares starting around 95 euros.

Sailings are only a few days a week, so a tight itinerary needs the schedule checked before anything else is booked.
