Tanzania's visa is 50 US dollars for a single entry, 100 dollars for a multiple entry visa that guides say is typically issued to US citizens, and it can be applied for as an e-Visa or bought on arrival. Bring clean, recent banknotes if you plan to pay in cash. Passports must have at least six months of validity and one blank page, and yellow fever vaccination is required for travelers arriving from countries where the disease is endemic, including during airport layovers of 12 hours or more, recorded in the yellow WHO booklet.
Zanzibar has its own immigration service, which surprises people. Even though Zanzibar is part of the Tanzanian Union, you need a valid passport to enter it from the mainland, and you fill out an arrival card on entering Stone Town and a departure card when you leave, by air or ferry. A traveler who already holds a Tanzanian visa is not charged again but completes an entry declaration, and the yellow fever card may be checked.
Border crossings
- Namanga, for safaris from Nairobi
The most popular land crossing for safari travelers going from Nairobi to Arusha and northern Tanzania's national parks, and visas are issued at the border post. It is among the busiest crossings and operates 24 hours according to one guide.
- Holili and Taveta, and the coast at Horohoro
Holili and Taveta, linking Kenya's Voi area with Moshi, is a One Stop Border Post. Horohoro, on the coast opposite Lunga Lunga, is the route from Mombasa toward Tanga and Dar es Salaam.
- Tunduma, the crossing from Zambia
Tunduma faces Nakonde in Zambia, and it is a key crossing for travelers arriving from Zambia or coming from Victoria Falls. It is one of the busiest, and guides say it operates around the clock.
- Mutukula and Kabanga, the northern and western gates
Mutukula is the crossing with Uganda, and Kabanga is with Burundi, opposite Kobero, and both are One Stop Border Posts. Songwe to Kasumulu connects the south with Malawi. Tanzania has borders with eight neighbors.

- Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar, by ferry
Azam Marine runs daily crossings between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, about two hours over 90 kilometers, with services also to Pemba and Tanga. Have your passport ready, since immigration is handled at Stone Town.

Major borders such as Namanga, Tunduma, and Mutukula operate around the clock, but some smaller ones close on weekends and public holidays, so verify opening hours beforehand.
