Ukraine remains under martial law in 2026, and that shapes entry far more than any ordinary visa rule does. Commercial flights are suspended, so every arrival, foreign visitor and Ukrainian alike, comes overland or, less commonly, by train from a neighboring country. Citizens of the EU, the US, the UK, Canada, Japan, and dozens of other countries can still enter visa free for up to 90 days, tallied by summing days spent rather than resetting on each exit, and the standard entry paperwork asks for a passport valid for the length of stay, travel insurance with at least 30,000 euros of medical coverage, and a stated purpose for the trip.
The restriction that matters most applies to Ukrainian men, not incoming foreign visitors. Martial law keeps an exit ban in place for men aged 18 to 60, with an August 2025 change letting men aged 18 to 22 leave freely, and a list of other exceptions for people with valid grounds and the right documents. It has no bearing on a foreign tourist's own entry, but it is the reason the border crossings themselves can be slow and heavily processed.
Border crossings
- Krakovets, Shehyni, and Hrebenne, from Poland
Poland is the busiest direction for entering Ukraine, with these three crossings handling most of the traffic. Expect real queues, particularly for anyone crossing with a vehicle, given how much cross-border logistics now moves this way with flights suspended.
- Moldova and Romania, the southern routes
Both countries border Ukraine's southwest, and crossings there see less of the exit-bound male traffic than the Polish crossings, though the same document and insurance rules apply.
- No commercial flights
Ukrainian airspace has been closed to civilian traffic since the full scale invasion began in February 2022, so a flight itinerary needs to end at a neighboring country's airport, with the Ukraine leg completed by land or rail from there.
Transit routes
- Buy insurance before you go, with the right minimum
The stated minimum is 30,000 euros of medical coverage, and a policy that does not meet it can be a problem at the border, not just an inconvenience.
- Plan the land leg from your arrival airport
Warsaw, Chisinau, or a similar regional hub is the practical flight endpoint, with a bus, train, or car covering the final stretch into Ukraine.
