U.S. Virgin Islands Travel Guide

The US Virgin Islands is unincorporated US territory, and for a US citizen that makes the trip a domestic one in every legal sense, no passport needed, the same as flying from New York to Florida. What has changed is the ID requirement for the flight itself: since 7 May 2025, every domestic air traveler aged 18 or older needs a REAL ID compliant credential to clear TSA, a driver's license with the star marker in the upper right corner, or an accepted alternative such as a passport, a plain older-style license no longer works for boarding.

Foreign visitors follow an entirely different track, the same requirements that apply to entering the US mainland, a valid passport and, where applicable, a US visa or an approved ESTA. One detail catches travelers off guard specifically here: flying home to the mainland from the USVI does mean clearing US Customs, unlike the return trip from Puerto Rico, and the neighboring British Virgin Islands require a passport for entry even from St. Thomas or St. John, despite how close together the two territories sit.
