Guide
South Africa has six land neighbors, and one of them, Lesotho, sits entirely inside it. Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Eswatini make up the rest. The Border Management Authority runs the border posts, and six of the busiest, Beitbridge, Lebombo, Oshoek, Maseru Bridge, Kopfontein, and Ficksburg Bridge, account for more than 80 percent of cross-border trade and passenger flows.
Those six are about to be rebuilt. A 12.5 billion rand overhaul, using the One-Stop Border Post model, is expected to start construction in late 2026 or early 2027, at roughly two to three years per site. The stated reasons are congestion, outdated infrastructure, and fragmented systems. For now, expect busy posts to stay busy and old buildings to stay old.
The air side is changing faster. South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation first went live in mid October 2025 for G20 participants, was extended to business and tourism visitors from China, India, Indonesia, and Mexico by late November 2025, and was officially launched by President Ramaphosa at OR Tambo on 12 August 2026.
Border crossings
- Beitbridge, the Zimbabwe crossing
The post on the road to Zimbabwe, and the first one named on the overhaul list. The Border Management Authority operates drones at a handful of critical points, Beitbridge among them.
- Lebombo, on the road to Mozambique
The Border Management Authority itself has called Lebombo one of the problematic ports of entry, and it has made statements about keeping it open during unrest on the Mozambican side and being ready for protest action in May 2026. It is a good post to check for news the day before, not just the day of.
- Maseru Bridge and Ficksburg Bridge, the Lesotho gates
Because Lesotho is completely surrounded by South Africa, every road into the mountain kingdom starts at a South African border post. Both are on the overhaul list, and Maseru Bridge leads to Lesotho's capital, Maseru.
- Kopfontein and Oshoek
Kopfontein is the crossing with Botswana, and Oshoek with Eswatini. Both are among the six posts that will be redeveloped, at roughly two to three years of construction per site.
Transit routes
- Lesotho, by way of South Africa
There is no way to reach Lesotho without crossing South African territory, so a Lesotho trip involves a South African border post on the way in and again on the way back.
- The ETA is for three airports only
It is valid for entry through O.R. Tambo, Cape Town, or Lanseria. If you arrive somewhere else, or by land or sea, use the standard permit or visa process instead.
Entry point notes
- Children and birth certificates, after the 2019 change
Since 8 November 2019, foreign children under 18 traveling with their parents can enter without extra documents such as birth certificates and consent letters. Children traveling on South African passports may be asked for a birth certificate showing both parents, and unaccompanied minors face additional documentation requirements.
- How long you can stay depends on the passport
Citizens of most EU states, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and Brazil get 90 days visa exempt, while others, including South Korea, Thailand, and Turkey, get 30. Check the current list, since this has been revised more than once.
- The ETA is not a general permit yet
It started with four nationalities, and the ETA is valid for up to 90 days a year, extendable for another 90, with processing typically instant or within 72 hours.
