Overstay penalty
Check with the embassy for overstay penalties. An ordinary short overstay carries an administrative fine of roughly EUR 600 to 1,200, among the stiffest routine figures in the Schengen area, plus a 90 day re-entry ban. Separately, a genuinely harsher and more current criminal law, Law 5226/2025, targets illegal entry and prolonged illegal stay more broadly, minimum 3 years imprisonment, a EUR 10,000 fine with no suspension, and a 10 to 15 year entry ban, aimed at irregular entry and prolonged illegal presence rather than an ordinary short-stay tourist who simply exceeds the 90 day limit and departs normally. Since 10 April 2026, manual passport stamping has been eliminated in favor of full digital tracking.
