Pre arrival registration
Registration with the migration authorities is required for any stay longer than 5 calendar days (weekends and public holidays excluded from that count), but since 2020 this is the host's obligation, not the traveler's own, the hotel, host, or inviting party must notify the migration service within 3 working days, electronically via the Visa-Migration Portal or the eQonaq system. Since 1 July 2026, this registration is additionally automated for arrivals through major airports and designated border checkpoints.
Overstay penalty
Check with the embassy for overstay penalties.A fine of 25 MCI (the Monthly Calculation Index, KZT 3,932 for 2025, so roughly KZT 98,300 or USD 190) or administrative expulsion applies once a traveler has overstayed by more than 10 days past the visa or exemption expiry date, alongside a possible 1 to 10 year re-entry ban for serious cases.
Currency limits
Declare cash above USD 10,000 or its equivalent in any foreign currency; local Kazakh Tenge (KZT) has no import restriction but cannot be exported at all; amounts of USD 100,000 or more additionally require proof of origin.
Extension
Apply for an extension at the nearest OVIR (migration police) office before the current visa expires, typically 4 to 8 weeks ahead; extensions are not automatic and require demonstrating continued eligibility. A traveler who has already overstayed must instead apply to the local migration service directly and may still face a fine.
