Colombia has a form that people argue about. Check-Mig is Migración Colombia's online pre-arrival form, and the official position, as reported in August 2026, is that it is not mandatory, a line the agency also took in a January 2025 video. Yet some airlines still email travelers saying it is required, and some gate agents still insist on seeing it. It is not a visa or an entry permit, and completing it can shorten the immigration interview, so most people do it anyway.
Most visa exempt visitors are admitted for up to 90 days, extendable once by another 90 days, for a maximum of 180 days per calendar year.
Border crossings
- Simón Bolívar International Bridge, Cúcuta to San Antonio del Táchira
A 300 meter bridge over the Táchira River connecting the Colombian side, at La Parada, with San Antonio del Táchira in Venezuela. It is described as the busiest crossing on that border, with 25,000 to 50,000 people crossing a day. Colombia reported in January 2026 that all land migration control posts on the Venezuelan border were operating normally, but busy periods still bring long lines.
- Rumichaca, Ipiales to Tulcán
The principal highway crossing between Colombia and Ecuador, about 3 km from Ipiales and 7 km from Tulcán. You get your passport stamped in Colombia, walk across the bridge, and complete Ecuadorian immigration on the other side, which guides put at under fifteen minutes. In 2026 the crossing was hit by a tariff war, with Ecuador raising tariffs from 30 to 50 to 100 percent between February and May and Colombia briefly matching before reversing on 13 and 14 April. Reporting described empty markets and idle trucks in Ipiales, but did not say the crossing closed to travelers, so check status before you go.
- Leticia and Tabatinga, on the Amazon
A trip here does not involve a bridge or a highway. The border with Brazil is an open urban one, and Avenida da Amizade is all that separates Leticia from Tabatinga. Leticia has no road connections in, so you fly or come by river.
- Panama, where the road simply stops
There is no road between Colombia and Panama. The Pan-American Highway breaks at Yaviza in Panama and picks up again at Turbo in Colombia, roughly 106 km away, across the Darién Gap. That makes it the one land border in this region you cannot drive or ride a bus across.

Leticia's location on the Amazon, where Colombia, Brazil, and Peru meet, means the same trip can involve three immigration systems. Cross only at official points, and get stamped.

Guides describe walking across the bridge, then taking a taxi or bus onward from Tulcán.
Entry point notes
- Check-Mig is useful, not a visa
Treat it as a way to reduce friction at the counter, especially if your airline wants to see it, and never as a substitute for the entry stamp or a visa where one is needed.
- The 180 days are a calendar year total
It is an annual cap. If you visit twice, both stays count toward it, and extending requires applying to Migración Colombia.
