Pakistan's visa on arrival has largely gone away, so the e-Visa is now the thing to arrange. One 2026 guide reports that the visa on arrival facility was suspended for most nationalities from January 2026, which means most travelers secure an e-Visa before departure. Guides put e-Visa fees from about 5 US dollars for a tourist visa, from 25 for business, and from 5 for transit, and describe the system as covering well over a hundred nationalities. Citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council states, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Bahrain, are reported as exempt from a visa or authorization for tourism and business.
The land borders are the part that has changed most. Fees, eligible lists, and processing times are the kind of detail that shifts, so confirm them on the official government portal before paying, and be wary of sites that charge a large premium for the same application.
Border crossings
- Wagah, the India crossing, closed
The Wagah border with India has been described as closed until further notice since April 2025, so an overland trip between Lahore and Amritsar is not something to plan on.
- Torkham, the Afghanistan crossing, for returnees only
Reporting from March 2026 says Torkham reopened exclusively for Afghan refugees returning from Pakistan, while trade, commercial traffic, and general passenger travel remained suspended.
- Khunjerab Pass, the China crossing
Guides list the Khunjerab Pass as operational. Confirm the current status and any nationality restrictions before building a Karakoram Highway itinerary around it.
- Taftan, the Iran crossing
A major crossing on the Iranian side. The sources used for this guide did not confirm its current status for tourists, so check your own government's advice before planning to use it.
Transit routes
- Get the e-Visa before you fly
If the visa on arrival is suspended for your passport, an airline may refuse to board you without an approval, so do not count on sorting it out at the airport.
- Do not plan an overland exit through Wagah or Torkham
Both were closed to ordinary travelers in the reporting used here, so a flight is the reliable way in and out.
