Guide

Vietnam has three land neighbors, China, Laos, and Cambodia, and the named border gates matter much more than a generic statement that the country accepts overland arrivals. Its official e-Visa system covers up to 90 days and can be single or multiple entry, but the traveler must choose an approved airport, land gate, or seaport in the application.

For many visitors, flying into Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Cam Ranh, or Phu Quoc is simpler than entering overland. A land itinerary can work well, especially from Cambodia or Laos, but only when the selected gate appears on the current official e-Visa port list.

Border crossings

  • Huu Nghi Friendship Gate-Dong Dang

This is the major road and rail gateway between northern Vietnam and China near Lang Son, with onward routes toward Nanning.

  • Lao Cai-Hekou

The Lao Cai crossing links Vietnam with China's Yunnan region and is the practical border for travelers connecting toward Kunming.

  • Moc Bai-Bavet

This is the main road corridor between Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh, widely used by buses and private vehicles crossing between Vietnam and Cambodia.

  • Lao Bao-Dansavanh and Cau Treo-Nam Phao

These are important road crossings from central Vietnam into Laos. Travelers should select the exact gate in the e-Visa application rather than assuming any Laos border will work.

Transit routes

  • Ho Chi Minh City-Moc Bai-Phnom Penh

The southern overland corridor is the most familiar Vietnam-Cambodia route, with regular bus and private-vehicle traffic through Moc Bai and Bavet.

  • Hanoi-Dong Dang-Nanning

The rail corridor toward China is a real international route, but passenger schedules can change, so confirm the current service before building the itinerary around it.

  • International airports by region

Noi Bai serves Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat serves Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang covers central Vietnam, and Cam Ranh and Phu Quoc serve major coastal or island destinations. Domestic ferries to Phu Quoc are not international immigration crossings.

Entry point notes

  • The named e-Visa port must match the trip

Approval is not enough by itself. The traveler must enter through the approved airport, land gate, or seaport selected from the official list, and a different border gate can cause a real entry problem.

  • The official e-Visa system allows up to 90 days

Vietnam's immigration guidance describes single and multiple entry e-Visas with a maximum validity of 90 days. The application must be completed while the traveler is outside Vietnam and the passport details must match exactly.

  • Land entry needs more planning than air entry

Airports have established airline and immigration workflows. At a land gate, the exact crossing, visa port selection, operating status, and onward transport all need to line up before departure.
